PROFINET is both a protocol and a marketing term used by Siemens to describe the Ethernet interfaces of its own automation devices. As a protocol, PROFINET is used, among other things, in communication with the ET 200SP IO systems. But also peripheral devices from other manufacturers increasingly support the PROFINET protocol for data exchange.
